When it comes to e-bikes and e-trikes, understanding pedal assist levels is key to maximizing your ride. Recently our son’s buddy, Ty, put the Hiboy P6 e-bike through its paces, demonstrating the various pedal assist settings. Watch the video to see these points in action.
Level 0: Pure Pedal Power
At level 0, there’s no motor assistance—just good old-fashioned pedaling. You’ll be working hard, like Ty is in the video. This is perfect if you want a true workout or need to conserve battery power.
Level 1: A Gentle Boost
With minimal motor assistance, you’re doing most of the work, but you’ll get a little help on flat terrain. It’s a nice balance if you want a light push while still putting in effort.
Levels 2 and 3: Balanced Power and Efficiency
These levels strike the perfect harmony between effort and battery usage. They’re ideal for commutes or casual rides, giving you just enough power without draining the battery too quickly. Ty’s takeoff at Level 3 showed how it offers a bit more zip than Level 2, making it great for covering ground quickly.
Level 4: Tackle Tough Terrain
Need more muscle for hills or challenging trails? Level 4 has you covered, delivering enough power to conquer tough terrain while still requiring some pedaling. It uses more battery, but it’s worth it when the road gets steep.
Level 5: Full Power Mode
Level 5 is the ultimate pedal assist, offering maximum power and speed. Ty didn’t even have to pedal at this level—the motor did all the work! While it’s a great option for steep hills or quick bursts of speed, it does drain the battery quickly.
This is Jesse’s favorite setting! He loves cruising on his e-trike in Level 5, letting the motor take over completely. For Jesse, our autistic son, this level isn’t just about power—it’s about freedom.
Whether you’re looking to get a workout, commute efficiently, or simply enjoy the ride, understanding pedal assist levels helps you tailor the experience to your needs. And for riders like Jesse, Level 5 is the ticket to independence and joy on the open road.
